Did you know that all our Pure Waste products are mainly made from the same yarn composition? The same recycled fiber is spun, knitted and woven using different techniques to create different fabrics -like lighter single jersey for T-shirts, heavier material for sweatshirts and hoodies, and soft woven fabric for shirts and dresses.
Pure Waste's core idea has always been saving natural resources, which is why we have decided to use only 100% recycled raw materials in our products. The idea was born in 2010, when hardly any 100% recycled textiles were available on the market. Development with our partners lasted several years before the launch of the first products, and it is still ongoing.
However, recycling does not bring benefits unless the product is both long-lasting and comfortable and offers a genuine alternative to products made from new fibers. Our yarn is a mix of recycled cotton and recycled polyester. Since recycling shortens the cotton fiber, polyester plays an important and necessary role in creating a strong yarn. Cotton gives the material softness and a pleasant feel, polyester durability and stability.
The cotton we use originates from the textile industry, where billions of kilos of cutting waste are generated annually. The scrap is carefully sorted by color and, after recycling, is spun together with polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. The new yarn is not dyed, but the color is determined by the color of the cotton. Because of this process, we can produce clothes with a water footprint of 99% and a carbon footprint of 50% smaller than similar products made from virgin raw materials.
However, simplicity also limits our design. Our yarns do not stretch in products that require flexibility and do not create the lightest fabric qualities. When it comes to colors, we can not just choose whatever we wish, but our color choices are always limited by the availability of cotton scraps. Still, using limited raw materials has its advantages. We know where our yarns come from and how they are manufactured.
The development of yarns, together with our partners, has produced several interesting products over the years, such as the Post waste collection launched in 2019. Post waste products combine recycled cotton and recycled polyester with recycled fiber from post consumer textiles. That is, 20% of the yarn's material was from used clothes. Our cooperation continues, and our latest goal is to develop a durable yarn in which polyester can be replaced with other recycled fibers. Development work on recycled viscose has progressed to the point where the new yarn quality has the required qualities. We can share the results of the work with you already next year!
